As most movies brought to us from the makers of Airplane!, several jokes appear throughout the credits of the 1991 comedy classic Hot Shots!
In Airplane! right after the listing for Best Boy is a listing for “Worst Boy – Adolph Hitler.” Top Secret has “This space for rent.” written in a blank space during the credits.
The Naked Gun lets us know, “In case of tornado – Southwest corner of basement.” Hot Shots follows that trend.
Midway through the credits the audience is given a recipe for Nobby Buns… and here it is:
• 4 cups sifted flour
• 1 1/2 cups sugar
• 2 teaspoons cinnamon
• 1 cup butter
• 3 eggs
Instructions
Cream the butter until well softened, then add it to the sugar and eggs.
Mix quickly with the flour.
Drop the mixture by teaspoonfuls in small, jagged heaps onto a cookie sheet.
Bake in an oven preheated to 375°F to 400°F.
Hot Shots! taught us that the best way to make an impact is to go bigger, stranger and considerably less sensible than anyone was expecting.
Wes Clough took a similar approach.
Thankfully, without the fighter jets.
Today, Wes Clough Creative Marketing brings together 20+ years of strategic marketing experience with creative design, branding, content, websites and a healthy disregard for doing things simply because “that’s how we’ve always done it.”
Because whether you’re making a movie, building a brand or trying to explain what the hell your business actually does…
Sometimes you just need to take the shot.
Preferably with the lens cap off.
In short:
Top Gun? No… Top Marketing? Potentially.
